Advanced Configuration

Recommended Configuration

The following list is the recommended settings for your machine running Linked Senior. They are not required but customers tend to be more successful when using use these settings.

  • Create a separate Linked Senior account to run our app
  • In the Linked Senior account setup the app to auto-start (see advanced instructions on this page for registry settings)
  • The Linked Senior account should not have a password. You can use a security policy to lock down the account. It's possible to set the account up with a password as long as the screen saver is off and you make the app available to anyone who uses the device. This could be staff, family or residents. There is an internal login to access patient health data if you have our PointClickCare integration.
  • Set the machine to not sleep or show a screen saver. The Linked Senior app has a built in screen saver.

MSI Installer

You can download the MSI version of the Windows installer below. Please note that this requires administrator permissions to run.

Advanced Instructions

Overview

Typically, when you run the Linked Senior installer it requires each user to register the app. If you have a large enterprise of users this can be difficult as each user will need to install on every machine they login to. Luckily there is a way to configure the app so it only needs to be registered once for each device you use.

At a high level we install a small json file in the AppData/Roaming directory of each user. This file should point to a single location where our app will be able to read/write the certificate we use for authentication.

Instructions

  1. Create a file for the user you are going to register with in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\LinkedSenior\config.json.
    The contents of this file should be:
    {
         "certLocation" : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Linked Senior"
    }
  2. You must create that directory and give it read/write permissions for all users. You can pick any directory you want but we will assume a linked senior directory in program files for these instructions.
  3. Run the MSI installer from above. It creates an installer in either the C:\Program Files\LinkedSenior Deployment\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\LinkedSenior Deployment\ directory.
  4. Run the linkedseniorDeploymentTool installer created by the MSI.
  5. Register the app using your Linked Senior username and password.
  6. Once registered you should see a kiosk.cert file in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Linked Senior directory.
  7. NOTE - Do not delete this directory. If it is deleted, the device will have to be re-registered.
  8. Login with a second account and verify the user has the config.json file in their appData\Roaming directory.
  9. Open the app for the new user and you should not have to register.

Overview

By default, the MSI Installer on windows will configure Linked Senior to be in fullscreen mode. If you want the ability to close the application window you can configure the application to not be in fullscreen mode at startup.

Instructions

  1. Install and register the application using the MSI installer above.
  2. Create a file in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\LinkedSenior\config.json. The contents of this file should be:
    {
         "kioskMode" : false
    }

    If you would like the app to run in fullscreen mode you can change your desktop shortcut to run the application window as Maximized
    Note if there is already a config.json file you can just add the setting above to the file.

  3. When the application starts you should see the icons for minimize, fullscreen and close in the top right.

Overview

There is no easy way to setup Linked Senior in kiosk mode using the MSI installer. Microsoft recommends you change some registry settings to do this.

Instructions

We do the following when configuring the registry for kiosk mode.

  1. Create an account with no password (we will call it linkedsenior).
  2. Create a startup.bat file in C:\program files\linked senior\. The contents should be:

    if exist C:\Users\linkedsenior\AppData\Local\linkedsenior\Update.exe (
         C:\Users\linkedsenior\AppData\Local\linkedsenior\Update.exe --processStart LinkedSenior.exe
    ) else (
         "C:\Program Files\LinkedSenior Installer\linkedsenior.exe"
         "C:\Program Files (x86)\LinkedSenior Installer\linkedsenior.exe"
    )

    This will check for an update and then start the Linked Senior app.

  3. Update the following registry settings.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "AutoAdminlogon"="1" ;specifies auto login
    "DefaultUserName"="linkedsenior" ;username to use
    "DefaultPassword"="" ;password to use
    "ForceAutoLogon"="1" ;log back in on logout

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "RunLogonScriptSync"="1" ;allow scripts to run before explorer runs
    "Shell"="C:\\Program Files\\Linked Senior\\startup.bat"

    Now you can logout and you should be automatically logged in (thanks to the registry settings) and Linked Senior should start (thanks to the startup.bat).
